Return to Kakawa: Drinking Chocolate in Santa Fe, NM

A couple of years back, I visited Kakawa Chocolate House and was absolutely delighted with my brief visit. They offer everything from drinking chocolate (on the spot or bags to make it at home) to a gorgeous array of truffles to brownies (including a few gluten-free flavors) and homemade ice cream.

Last time, I went with their ice cream, of course, but with it being January and with pandemic life restricting my travel more than in the past, I’ve decided to incorporate some drinking chocolate reviews into this blog. (Let me know what you think in the comments!)

If you haven’t had drinking chocolate before, it’s not entirely dissimilar to hot cocoa, but it’s usually a much richer, thicker experience than the average hot cocoa. It also, in my experience, tends to be made with super high quality ingredients, and it’s a great way of showcasing particular sources of chocolate.

Here’s what I tried:

Kakawa’s American – This is where they start you with. They gave me a sample (I was the only customer at the time) but it felt weird to take off my mask, so this was the only sample I took. Kakawa’s American is an absolutely delicious showcase for their classic chocolate. The ingredients include 70% chocolate, organic almond milk and vanilla. I highly recommend this for anyone!

Chili – This is from their Meso-American menu. Their chili chocolate includes 100% chocolate (cacao), New Mexico chili, and coconut sugar. Wow! This starts with a delightful chocolate flavor, followed by a huge dried chile spice kick behind it. It’s so impressive! And then the chile flavor quickly clears and you’re ready to drink more. A delightful warming experience.

Jeffersonian – This comes from their European and Contemporary menu. In this case, it’s very much an old-fashioned, not very sweet, darker but not grainy, chocolate. This is rich and full, featurig 70% chocolate, organic almond milk, and nutmeg. The nutmeg is what gives it that classic older American chocolate recipe taste. Yum!

I kept going back and forth between which flavor I liked more. I had a small sample of the first and 3 ounce portions of each of the others. (In non-pandemic times, they’ve got a sampler available, but I made do.) I also picked up a couple of truffles (prickly pear and a goat cheese and sage) that I am savoring this week.

Thanks so much to Kakawa Chocolate House for another excellent experience. The customer service is second to none, and you don’t want to miss this chocolate!

P.S. Their drinking chocolate is available by mail for those in the United States. Head here to order!

Kakawa Chocolate House, Santa Fe, NM

If you’re looking for a wonderful place to spend an afternoon or a half hour, this adorable chocolate cafe is it!Kakawa House, Santa Fe, New Mexico | In Search of a Scoop

The super friendly server encouraged me to try as many flavors as I wanted to, and the owner was also super nice and thanked me at the end of my visit.Kakawa House, Santa Fe, New Mexico | In Search of a Scoop

They clearly label tons of gluten-free brownies and chocolates, so I made sure to grab a brownie (how could I resist?) and I’d LOVE to stop by again and try some more treats. They also offer chocolate sorbet.Kakawa House, Santa Fe, New Mexico | In Search of a Scoop

Here’s what I tried!

Spicy Aztec – Super yum! It gets hotter and hotter as you eat it, a tasty chocolate with spice to it.

Classic Chocolate – This is a rich, creamy darker chocolate, though not creamy like a soft serve. It’s really, really nice.

Sea Salt Caramel – Oh my word! Oh my gosh. This might be the best I’ve had! It’s like the base is literally a creamier version of a melted caramel with the dairy and all…yum! It has a tanginess to it like a caramel. Yes, probably this is currently my #1 of all time for this flavor!

Although the ice cream is pricier at $6 for 6 ounces, you can add whipped cream or hot fudge for only $.50, and you should DEFINITELY add hot fudge because it’s probably the best I’ve ever had! A must try.

Kakawa House has decent parking options (harder to find in Santa Fe sometimes) and between the wonderful service and outstanding quality, this is a must visit while you are in town. Watch their hours and plan carefully to make sure you get there during your next trip. It’s well worth it!

Discovering La Lecheria in Santa Fe

La Lecheria is a gem of a place in downtown Santa Fe. It’s true craft ice cream, handmade and sourced locally and without any preservatives. AKA my favorite type of ice cream, of course.

We walked in on a cold winter day and were delighted to find an assortment of creative and gluten-free flavors to choose from. Their portions are small, but very reasonably priced for a city at $3 for a single, $5 for a double or $7 for a flight like I settled on.Board at La Lecheria, Santa Fe, NM | In Search of a Scoop

The staff was incredibly generous. As I kept trying flavor after flavor, she made it clear that I had no obligation to buy and could just try every single one if I wanted to! I ultimately decided to leave a couple of flavors for next time (vanilla bean and Iconik coffee), but I was definitely tempted to try them all. I found all of them (minus one) very creamy and extremely satisfying. Here’s what I tried:Ice cream flight, La Lecheria, Santa Fe, NM | In Search of a Scoop

Tahini White Chocolate – This has a bit of a nutty undertone, and the white chocolate was very subtle. It’s definitely a gentle flavor.

Mango Tamarind – The mango is very prominent here. The staff said it would be great with a little sea salt on it. That sounds pretty wonderful!

Miso Red Chile – This was really fun, but I didn’t find it super memorable.

Saffron Rose – This is definitely a prominent rose. It’s really delicious and creamy. Yum. This would be my preference over vanilla bean in general!

Green Chile – It starts spicy, then it’s creamy then after it’s spice again. I adore green chiles and I love this. It’s so creamy and I love the amount of sweetness. It only comes midway. It reminds me a bit of the green chile/cheese combo common in savory foods. It’s as great as I’d hoped.

Mint Chip – This has great chocolate with a touch of sweetness. You can taste the mint leaf. It’s a more natural version of the ice cream I love in Epcot. This makes my top three for mint chip, which is hard to do. Super super good. Epcot has the chocolate flakes, but this is amazing. It melts in your mouth and has just the right creaminess. This chocolate is real and deep and not too sweet and a nice size of chip too.

Chocolate Sea Salt- This reminds me of a darker chocolate mousse. It’s got the perfect touch of sea salt, just a bit. I found the consistency is almost of whipped cream! So light and frothy and kind of creamy.

La Lecheria is amazing. I still have tons to see in Santa Fe, but it’s currently my top recommendation. Eat and enjoy! Thank you, La Lecheria, I will be back soon! Santa Fe, NM | In Search of a Scoop

Ecco in Santa Fe

On a recent visit to Santa Fe, I stopped into Ecco Espresso and Gelato. They pride themselves on bringing fresh, natural and authentic gelato to Santa Fe.Ecco Espresso and Gelato, Santa Fe, NM | In Search of a Scoop

They have a beautiful downtown location with plenty of seating and art on the walls. I found their staff friendly and almost all of their flavors were gluten-free, so I tried several and really enjoyed them. A Kids or small size is under $4, and they let me get a couple of flavors, so the prices weren’t too bad for gelato in a city. Here’s what I got:Ecco Espresso and Gelato, Santa Fe, NM | In Search of a Scoop

I adore the presentation of gelato!

Earl Grey Tea – I sure love this flavor in ice cream and gelato! The tea flavor was very forward here, just lovely. Obviously it was a lighter intensity than ice cream but this was excellent.

Nutella – This reminded me, a bit, of a chocolate shake crossed with Nutella. It was very satisfying, although it was subtler than some similar gelato I’ve had.

Pistachio – This is probably the most pistachio ice cream type thing I’ve had, ever. It’s just full of pistachio flavor with just a touch of cream and super good! Possibly a best, and definitely in my current pistachio top 3!Ecco Espresso and Gelato, Santa Fe, NM | In Search of a Scoop

Strawberry Habanero – Step one here is the creamy strawberry. After that’s about past, you get the big spicy kick of the habanero. This is a really satisfying dual flavor.

Panna – This is Italian sweet cream. It’s very subtle, like a sweet cream or milk flavor. I didn’t find it super memorable.

It looked like they carried several vegan flavors. Overall everything here was super smooth and pretty perfect for gelato. It was about as creamy as gelato can be!

I really enjoyed my visit to Ecco and will definitely go back when I’m in the mood for gelato. Thanks!
