I rarely write about ice cream events, but a recent outing is ripe for review. A friend of mine, who I met for the first time this summer, asked if I’d like to attend a Fort Collins-area ice cream social. It’s basically a potluck, and it’s an annual event. Local residents get together and share their homemade or store-bought gourmet ice cream and gelato. Some bring toppings too, and the host provides a wonderful gluten-free toppings bar and a few happy volunteers to do the scooping.
When I arrived, I didn’t know what to expect. But I was quickly shown to the name tags and then the wall of flavors, where I added my own Talenti and put in my first order.
Brent, as I could see from the list, had made a lot of homemade flavors, so I was eager to try them. After I was handed a small bowl, I was amazed to realize the large table of goodies was all gluten-free, including angel food cake, brownies and more. Later, I found warm apple topping a guest had provided.
Here are the flavors I settled on. I ultimately went back for a second bowl of commercial flavors.
Brent’s Chai Chocolate Chip – The chai flavor is tasty, and the chips were more bitter than usual – I enjoyed this combination. Not particularly creamy.
Brent’s Dark Chocolate – Pleasant flavor, if unremarkable. It’s not super creamy but it melted easily in the mouth. I loved it with a brownie!
Culver’s Georgia Peach – I enjoyed this. Not revelatory, but great if you like peach. And it went well with the toppings.
Talenti Sea Salt Caramel – As usual, gelato doesn’t have the same creaminess, but this was very nice!
Getting to choose from a couple dozen flavors, and keep going back, was wonderful, and honestly the toppings themselves made it super special. The company was fun and enjoyed my stories of full-time RVing and ice cream blogging, and despite only knowing one person there, I felt very comfortable.
I highly recommend ice cream potlucks for your own summer gatherings, and if you’re ever in Fort Collins and get an invite to this, be sure to check it out. Wesley, thanks for the invitation, and Georgia, thank you for hosting!
