I don’t typically review gelato places, and I don’t typically review chains. But when I saw the exceptional reviews for Frost ABQ, it was time to make an exception. This is a fancy gelato chain hailing from Tucson. It’s in a nice, upscale mall location.
When I told the server about my gluten intolerance, he was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I felt very confident putting in my order.
Overall, everything but the fruit flavors were super creamy. Honestly, the texture was excellent and really exceeded my expectations for how creamy gelato can be. It’s clear they’re using quality ingredients and know how to process them.
The prices are as you’d expect for an upscale gelato place. I got three flavors in a very large cup for about $8 plus tax. They also semi-patiently indulged me while I tried half of the store.
Here’s what I got:
Cheesecake – This flavor isn’t gluten-free because they sprinkle graham cracker on top. So if you’re celiac or extremely sensitive to gluten, stay away. I tried a bite scooped from the bottom. I thought it was quite good, though not super rich, and definitely tasted like cheesecake.
Mint Chocolate – This is kind of an out of this world, transcendent, super minty flavor. It might make my top ten! I really enjoyed it.
Dark Chocolate – Oh my word. This is very rich and dark, smooth and just lovely. It’s creamy too, but mostly it’s just super smooth, dark, rich and decadent. You’ll find very occasional nubs of dark chocolate as well. This is better than the majority of ice creams and probably the best dark chocolate I have ever had. It was that good. The intensity is like fudge – but not the texture.
Sea Salt Caramel – This is a lighter caramel flavor. It’s creamy and almost like a cheesecake. Wonderful, silky smooth and better than ice creams, with the sea salt making it pop.
Strawberries and Champagne – This is their store’s most popular flavor. It leads a bit with strawberries, but you definitely get the champagne flavor too. It’s refreshing and delicious. As I usually find with fruit gelato, it wasn’t quite as creamy as the others. This paired really well with the dark chocolate too.
The last three are the flavors I purchased. I honestly can’t recommend these folks enough. It’s some of the best gelato I’ve ever had, and possibly the best ice cream or gelato you’ll find in Albuquerque. Have some for me!
